Starting April 2026, Coloradan Road Safety will get its first phase of the changes as a result of the implementation of House Bill 24-1021. This bill shows the extremes of what education can do in order to combat the number of fatalities. This means more education that will need to be completed in order to receive a driver’s permit or license. As a pioneer business in driving education, American Driving Academy has adapted its teaching to these changes in legislation. This ensures that the students driving right after the legislation changes not only meet the law but are equipped to drive in the current mountain driving conditions. This presents a shift in driving school conditions moving from the the conditions across state borders to the conditions of the American Rocky Mountains.
New 30-Hour Education Course
The 2026 driver safety law in its most simple form states that anyone wanting to receive a driver’s permit that is under 18 years of age will have to complete 30 hours of driving school. The hope with this addition to the law is to ensure that every teen driver has the necessary education to drive. This would be in regards to the previous law standards which allowed for some form of middle-turned minors to skip this form of education because of the given middle-turned age of the minors, but the state has given further incentive for every group of minors to receive the education therefore driving school is given as high of a priority as driving. It is the hope of the sponsors of this law as well as American Driving Academy that each student is filled with enough knowledge in order to defend driving as a necessary evil. This encompasses all knowledge that includes, the right-of-way, the thousands of miles of road, the difference in driving conditions and the of of the lack of control that is part of driving.
New Guidelines for Adult and Young Adult Learners
A lot of people think that these new laws just apply to teen drivers, but that is not the case. The April 2026 update now includes young adults ages 18-21. For this group, the state mandates additional requirements. Either the full 30-hour course or a new 4-hour Driver Awareness Program must be completed prior to being issued a permit or license. This is to ensure that far behind drivers receive instruction on current traffic laws and defensive driving. The American Driving Academy understands these new requirements and offers young adults with busy work and school schedules, with the option of taking these programs at their own pace.

Increased Requirements for Behind-the-Wheel Training
Starting in 2026, in addition to classroom instruction, Colorado law will require more “active” forms of instruction. For students aged 15 and 16, it will be a requirement to do 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a driving school teacher. In American Driving Academy, for instance, driving school teachers have many years of experience and consider these hours to be instrumental in getting students to avoid bad habits. In addition to these hours, Colorado law still requires students to log at least 50 practice hours, 10 of which have to be at night. American Driving Academy’s parent support aids help parents effectively participate in the practice by using structured logbooks and “co-pilot” guides.
Primary Enforcement and Safety in the Future
A big part of the April 2026 changes is the first-time safety violation enforcement for the younger tier of drivers. Seat belt use is still an issue for enforcement officers because they can stop a vehicle if a seat belt is not on. In the new law, this is a huge “trust” sign because it shows that the law is willing to take steps to help people. American Driving Academy supports the measures with the “Zero Tolerance” education modules that illustrate the point that driving is a privilege and comes with responsibilities. By creating an environment with students in the academy that helps them understand the “why” and not just the “how” students develop self-satisfaction towards “safety” driving instead of seeing it as an enforcement regulation.
FAQs
Q1 Does the new law affect me if I already have my permit?
The new requirements generally apply to all permit and license applications submitted on or after the implementation date. If you already have a permit, you were legally entitled to not follow the existing GDL requirements, but you can and should complete the extra safety modules.
Q2 Is the 30-hour driver education course available online?
That is correct. As long as the online course is state-approved and aligns with the new 2026 standards, the online course meets the requirement. The American Driving Academy is one of the schools that offer the course through multiple platforms, including in person and online.
Q3 What if there is no driving school within a 30-mile distance?
Students who live in rural areas and are more than 30 miles away from a registered driving school may qualify for some exceptions concerning the 6-hour behind-the-wheel teaching requirement, although they are often required to do more additional driving hours with a parent or guardian to compensate.
